Quite often in dental practice the hygienist is the clinician with the most contact with a client and therefore their role in selection and preparation of a suitable implant case should be recognised. This article aims to give an understanding of the hygienist’s potential for aiding selection of, and the educating of implant candidates. It should help to provide basic criteria for selection enabling the clinician to assess the mouth, and support the devising of a plan of treatment as a team. Overall the main objective is to give the reader an understanding of the need for stability in the mouth prior to implants.
