In this article I shall look at what composes a patient record and what obligations the dental team has to maintain and secure these records. As it is quite detailed, I shall produce this in two parts.

This article is based on a talk presented on 14th February 2011 at the Ulster Museum, Belfast. The event was sponsored by Philips Sonicare and had presentations by Professor Philip Preshaw, Amarjit Gill and myself. During the day we covered treating periodontal disease, making treatment work in practice and some of the dento-legal aspects of failing to treat periodontitis.

In this article, I will look at the history of dental hygienists in the UK and how we are slowly moving forward to a time when dental hygienists will no longer require a prescription to work. This is part of a talk I will be giving to the BDA East Midlands group on 02nd February 2010.

The GDC issued a series of documents under the banner “Standards for Dental Professionals” . These are our ethical guidance by which we must practice. They are seen as many as ambiguous at best. This is my take on the six guiding principles published by the GDC

Along with compulsory registration came the requirement for compulsory Continuing Professional Development. This appears to be a thorn in the side for many, but if sourced correctly, it really does not need to cost a great deal of money.
