We take a light-hearted look at a classic Christmas story with a dental ‘twist’
It’s Christmas Eve, patients are filling the waiting room and the pressure is on Bob and his fellow associates to get through the afternoon with a smile and a cheery festive word or three. The practice is full, the staff a-jangle with a combination of tiredness and excitement and then the final straw, Bob’s old and poorly-maintained handpiece finally gives up the ghost. Bob had always dreamt of using the very latest turbine from a leading manufacture, and Eb the practice owner has made several promises to new handpieces, but it seems there’s always another priority.
At lunchtime, over a few tired festive snacks, Bob decides to talk to Eb about the benefits of using a better quality handpiece in the hope that he will listen, but Bob’s words were shooed away with “In my day we used what we were given and didn't complain”, followed by “Why should I spend my money making your life more comfortable. All handpieces are the same and you don't need new ones”. Bob skulked off to the corner of the room to murmur to the practice manager that he would be looking for a new job in the new year!
That night Eb’s sleep was very disturbed. He tossed and turned reliving the day’s events, but finally he fell in to a deep sleep. As the night went on Eb began to dream of his days before practice ownership, back to his early years as a dentist. How excited he was to be in a healthcare profession where he could improve people lives and interact with like-minded colleagues, it felt good to remember those hopeful and exciting times.
The dream moves on to the present day. Eb’s mind clouds with the thoughts of the pressures of practice ownership, the constant demands of the staff, equipment breaking down, all whilst trying to still fulfil patients’ expectations. The voice in Eb’s head changes tack and questions if Eb has brought some of these issues on himself by not being more considerate to his staff or failing to buy good quality equipment that will stand the test of time. This saddens Eb, he knows he’s a good dentist, he just needs to refocus and change a few things to make the lives of his staff and patients more pleasurable and rewarding.
A more positive future
The dream takes Eb to back to his practice, but it looks and feels very different. The positive energy from the staff radiates through the whole building with patients happy to be a part of his practice. Bob and the other associates are keen to learn from him and buying them new, better quality handpieces has improved moral and the standard of their work. Eb can see that everyone is happy and the voice in his head tells him revenues are up by 15% in Q1 of 2017.
Eb wakes on Christmas morning knowing he has a chance to make a new start, at last he can finally see the error of his ways. He quickly picks up his mobile to text Bob, wishing him a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, followed by a promise to buy him and his associates the new NSK handpieces they so richly deserve.
