Avoiding litigation: Preventing and managing peri-implant diseases - Professor Simon Wright, Kathryn Mayo and Jenny Walker

Professor Simon Wright, Kathryn Mayo and Jenny Walker. This lecture is particularly useful for hygienists and therapists who undertake either implant maintenance, or implant-related non-surgical therapy. It provides a deep insight into what peri-implantitis is and the protocols you can use in practice for maintenance, treatment, and analysis (with risks and benefits) for all preferred forms of instrumentation.

Aims and objectives:

  • Understand the prevalence and incidence of peri-implantitis
  • Understand true peri-implantitis and other diagnosis that can be misdiagnosed as peri- implantitis
  • Discuss the differences between a tooth and an implant and how this affects the management protocol
  • Define Peri-implant diseases
  • Assessment and recall protocols for the implant patient and maintenance protocols for healthy and diseased implant patients
  • Instrument choice and debridement techniques for non-surgical therapy
  • Referral pathways
  • Further training

  • Gain an overview of material selection - ceramics vs composites
  • Know how to undertake such cases and when to not undertake them
  • Clinical video, how to make a mock-up prior to preparing multiple teeth for veneers
  • An overview of veneers cases

Full arch rehabilitation with the All-on-4 concept - Dr. Riz Syed

In this lecture, Dr. Riz Syed provides an overview of the All-on-4 concept.

Aims and objectives:

  • Gain a clinical overview of the steps in carrying out All-on-4 concept treatments

Human factors in dentistry: Reducing litigation - Professor Simon Wright

In this video, Professor Simon Wright provides an insightful lecture on the topic of human factors. Every single dental professional would be impacted by human factors and mitigating these to improve our outcomes and reduce errors is important for patient care and safety. Professor Wright delves into this topic, with a particular focus on implant dentistry.

Aims and objectives:

  • Gain an overview, how human factors can affect outcomes and result in errors in surgery, and the impact of patient care and safety
  • Examples of the complications and adverse outcomes that can arise due to human factors, and the impact on patient care and safety
  • Gain an understanding of the strategies that can be applied to reduce human factors
  • Understand the barriers to applying the strategies to reduce the impact of human factors

Immediate tooth replacement, understanding the key parameters for success - Dr. Joseph Kan

In this video, Dr. Joseph Kan discusses immediate tooth replacement.

Aims and objectives:

  • Understand the rationale behind immediate implant placement
  • The key parameters that lead to success of immediate implants and the biological basis behind this
  • Understand the complications that can arise from the failure to follow the parameters
  • Understand the management of these complications

Occlusion - the good, the bad and the unknown

In these next 3 lectures, Dr’s. Kushal Gadhia, Mahul Patel and Riaz Yar discuss the good, the bad and the unknown aspects of occlusion.

Occlusion - the good - Dr. Kushal Gadhia

In this video, Dr. Kushal Gadhia covers the "good", detailing the importance of recording occlusion. Providing an overview of how occlusion, and the physiology of the periodontal ligament, are related, the determinants of occlusion and thus the force distribution. Dr. Gadhia stresses the importance, and relevance, of anterior guidance and why it is important to start from this when rehabilitating patients.

Aims and objectives:

  • The importance of recording occlusion
  • Gain an understanding of how occlusion and the physiology of the periodontal ligament are related, the determinants of occlusion and thus the force distribution
  • The importance, and relevance, of anterior guidance and why it is important to start from this when rehabilitating patients

Occlusion - the bad - Dr. Mahul Patel

In this video, Dr. Mahul Patel discusses the "bad". Providing a good overview of cases, where the uncertain and difficult aspects of occlusion can result in either a compromise, or unpredictable, outcomes of treatment. Dr. Patel stresses the importance of this factor in your treatment of cases. Showing cases where complications occurred due to severe bruxism, anterior open bites, excessive loading, and uncertain teeth arrangements.

Aims and objectives:

  • Gain an overview of cases where the uncertain and difficult aspects of occlusion can result in either a compromise, or unpredictable outcomes of treatment
  • The importance of this factor in the treatment of cases
  • Understand, through cases, where complications occurred due to severe bruxism, anterior open bites, excessive loading and uncertain teeth arrangements

Occlusion - the unknown - Dr. Riaz Yar

In this video, Dr. Riaz Yar details the "unknown". Covering the unknown areas of occlusion. Sometimes patients appear with non-specific pain related to some restorative changes conducted by clinicians. While clinicians may be unable to identify the cause of these, Dr. Yar provides an alternative view of what may be causing these changes in patients. He discusses the adaptation plasticity in patients, while he discusses the possible aspects of what may happen in patients with reduced plasticity - who instead have occlusal dysesthesia.

Aims and objectives:

  • Understand why sometimes patients appear with non-specific pain, related to some restorative changes conducted by clinicians
  • Dr. Yar provides an alternative view of what may be causing these changes in patients
  • Gain an overview of adaptation plasticity in patients, while he discusses the possible aspects of what may happen in patients with reduced plasticity - who instead have occlusal dysesthesia/occlusal vigilance

Predictable aesthetics and biomechanics in fixed prosthodontics - Dr. Basil Mizrahi

In this video, Dr. Basil Mizrahi discusses fixed prosthodontics.

Aims and objectives:

  • Understand the steps to precision, in restorative work
  • Gain tips on achieving precise, accurate, impressions, temporaries and fit
  • The benefits of precision
  • Gain an overview of the factors that will enhance the precision in restorative work during impressions, temporaries and fit

The art and science of tooth morphology - Dr. Jurgita Sybaite

In this lecture, Dr. Jurgita Sybaite begins with an overview of the importance of understanding morphology. Dr. Sybaite then covers step-by-step the morphology of anterior teeth by use of a practical exercise (which the viewer can do while watching), understanding the morphology of a central incisor.

Aims and objectives:

  • Understand why morphology matters
  • Understand where science and art are, in relation to morphology
  • Techniques to learn morphology
  • Understand anterior teeth morphology
  • Through an exercise, learn how to visualise and understand morphology

The treatment of tooth wear - Dr. Didier Dietschi

In this video, Dr. Didier Dietschi details direct, partial and full moulding techniques to reconstruct anatomy and VDO in toothwear cases.

Aims and objectives:

  • Gain an overview of toothwear including aetiology and severity
  • Gain knowledge on how to diagnose these cases and ascertain prognosis and treatment planning, based on the level of severity
  • How to assess the severity
  • Understand, via detailed examples of clinical cases, where to use direct, indirect or a combination of both
  • Understand the treatment rationale in the cases of toothwear

To treat or not to treat…that is the question - Dr. Sanjeev Bhanderi

In this lecture, Dr. Sanjeev Bhanderi provides an overview of how to assess the various aspects of the tooth, to deem whether to go ahead with the endodontic treatment or not. This lecture is very helpful for treatment planning and the decision making process.

Aims and objectives:

  • Understand when to treat, when to refer, or when to consider the prognosis of a tooth poor
  • Understand the restorative analysis
  • Gain an understanding of the clinical complexity
  • Gain an overview of disinfection techniques
